A lorry fire has closed a stretch of a main route in Berkshire.

The A34 is shut southbound between the M4 at junction 13 for Chieveley to the A339. One lane of the northbound carriageway reopened shortly before 08:30 BST.

The fire involving the transporter lorry, that was carrying a further two lorries on its trailer, initially closed both the A34 and the motorway above at about 03:30. The M4 has since been reopened.

National Highways said recovery work was under way. Drivers are being urged to allow extra travelling time, re-route or delay their journey, with disruption also affecting motorists in Oxfordshire.

A structural engineer is assessing potential damage to a bridge structure where the lorry came to rest.

The carriageway also needs to be resurfaced once the transporter has been cleared, National Highways added.

Thames Valley Police said there were no reports of injuries.
