Bath time games with baby

Daily routines like bath time offer the best opportunity for language learning.

During bath time you can chat as you wash so that your little one has the chance to learn and connect what you're saying with what you're doing.

How to chat through bathtime for sensory learning

Chatting at bath time is a fun way to help boost your baby's language development.

Bath time is the perfect chance to talk to your little one and introduce new words because they are engaged and more attentive.

You can use this time to talk your child through what you’re doing, from running the water to using soap. As you start playing, you can repeat words for what you’re doing like 'splash' and 'wash' to help your little one connect words and actions.

Bath time is a great chance for your little one to learn the names of different body parts. Try naming different body parts as you splash for example, “look at your hands! Can you splash with your hands” or “look at your feet.”

You can make bubbles and blow them or try to make bubble beards and hair. Your little one will learn to use descriptive words you use like 'bubbly', 'soft' and 'fluffy.'

To add to the fun, you might want to bring in rubber ducks, toy boats and other toys that they can play with. Be sure to name these and what they do too.

The benefits of talking to baby at bath time

  • Bath time is a ready-made time to chat with your baby and boost their speech development as part of your daily routine
  • Bath time can be fun and engaging for your baby. They will be excited to splash around and play with bubbles and more likely to listen to your words as you play
  • During bath time you get to spend quality time together
