Recipe: How to make Eurovision flag biscuits
NOTE: A grown-up must supervise and help with preparation and baking.
Step 1
Line two baking trays with baking paper. Make sure these trays can fit in your fridge or freezer.
Step 2
Using a wooden spoon or spatula, beat together the butter and caster sugar in a large bowl until smooth.
TOP TIP: Don’t cream the butter as if you were making a cake or the biscuits will be very bubbly on top and more likely to spread!
Step 3
Next, using a hand or electric whisk, whisk in the vanilla extract. Add the flour and use a spatula to mix into a smooth dough.
TOP TIP: You can use your hands to help mix the flour into the dough.
Step 4
Now flour your surface. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough until it's about the thickness of a pound coin (or a euro - for Eurovision!)
Step 5
Once rolled out, using your cookie cutter, stamp out your heart/flag shaped biscuits and transfer to your lined baking trays. Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes, or in the freezer for 10 minutes.
Step 6
With the help of an adult, preheat your oven to 180 degrees or gas mark 6. Bake your biscuits for 8-10 minutes or until a pale golden colour.
TOP TIP: the smaller biscuits will bake more quickly. Pop onto a wire rack to cool completely before icing.
How to make Eurovision biscuits' royal icing
Step 1
Add egg whites to a bowl and with an electric whisk, whisk in the icing sugar until smooth. You may need a little more icing sugar or egg white to adjust the consistency slightly.
Step 2
Divide the icing between different bowls according to how many different colours you need for your flags. Stir in the gel food colourings to make different colours for the flags.
Step 3
Transfer the coloured icing to piping bags and then have fun piping the Eurovision flags on your biscuits. Enjoy!
