To complete a miserable day for England captain Ben Stokes suffered a recurrence of a left hamstring injury.
The captain was in visible distress as he left the field clutching the same left hamstring he injured in August, subsequently missing four Tests.
Stokes was hurt bowling his third over of the third day, midway through the afternoon session. He pulled up in the follow-through of his second delivery and went straight to the dressing room.
He did not return for the rest of New Zealand's innings and a decision will be made on if he is fit to bat in England’s second innings.
