George Hill is into his second over and produces a beauty to left-hander Ben Slater which squares him up and leaves the pitch but fails to get an edge.

That was unlucky and Yorkshire, while largely keeping the handbrake on league leaders Notts, could do with a second wicket to justify putting their visitors in.

Slater responds to the reprieve by hitting Jordan Thompson in the next over for consecutive fours to release the pressure somewhat.

    Derbyshire are still going well against Kent - they are 79-0 in the 17th over, with David Lloyd 35 not out and Caleb Jewell on 28.

    Glamorgan are trying to rebuild following the loss of their openers against Middlesex. Marnus Labuschagne and Sam Northeast are now together and they are 40-2 in the 15th.

    No joy yet for leaders Leicestershire, who have tried four bowlers so far against Lancashire, who are 46-0 after 17 overs

    Decent fightback this from Durham after losing skipper Alex Lees for a diamond duck.

    Ben McKinney and Emilio Gay have crafted their half-century stand with patience and enthusiastic running between the wickets with boundaries at a (only four so far).

    Gay flashes hard at one from Migael Pretorius and is not very far away from nicking that but a couple of balls later is dropped at mid-wicket by a diving Jack Leach as he flicks one off his pads.

    He then turns the next one past Leach (on the ground this time) and then run a couple to bring up the 50.

    Essex have certainly made the most of anything loose that has come their way - a sound tactic on such a green pitch.

    Jordan Clark is too full and Tom Westley off-drives elegantly with a high flourish for four runs.

    An equally good cover drive follows - the 14th boundary of the morning.

    The fielder receives some consolation pats on the back but will feel he should have held on to that.

    They all go up at New Road as Ben Allison hits Tom Latham on the front pad.

    It looks VERY close. But it looks like Latham as shuffled JUST enough outside the line of off stump.

    Later in the over he's at it again and the Pears are convinced Latham has edged one via his pad through to Gareth Roderick.

    Again nothing given.

    There’s a decent crowd at New Road for what in recent years has been dubbed the Pears v Bears derby.

    Early signs suggest, like the last game here, this one could be low scoring.

    Certainly Alex Davies appears to be expecting run scoring to require circumspect batting. He’s been more restrained than usual after opting to bat first and seeing his opening partner, Rob Yates, dismissed in the second over.

    The good news for Warwickshire is they have Chris Rushworth and Chris Woakes for the first time this season. The home side will hope the experienced pair will take time to get into their stride having not played for some time.

    Fletcha Middleton takes a liking to Ari Karvelas, cracking the Sussex seamer for 10 in that over.

    The first was not a great ball but still clipped nicely off his legs behind square but the second was altogether more pleasing on the eye, punched through point high on the backfoot.

    Josh Davey gets one to nip back from round the wicket and hits the left hander as he goes back to try to flick it away.

    The Notts opener is playing the ball more with his box than his bat at the moment and it is making painful viewing.

    Grant Stewart fires down a no-ball and Caleb Jewell punches it through backward point for four as he and David Lloyd post a 50 partnership for Derbyshire's first wicket from 58 balls.

    The Australian is 17 not out and Lloyd has 22.

    He comes forward hard to one from Ben Allison from round the wicket and gets a thick, uncontrolled edge which flies just wide of a diving third slip.

    Yorkshire coach Anthony McGrath had made no secret that he had requested a bit more green on this pitch with the mower set at 12mm and it certainly looks that way.

    You can barely tell the difference between the cut strip and the adjacent wickets which given the dry weather must have taken a bit of watering.

    “All the grass at Headingley is doing is making the ball carry,” said McGrath. “I don’t see balls rolling along the floor, flying off a length or nipping a mile.

    “We haven’t been able to get wickets in previous years at Headingley, and it’s just giving the bowlers a chance to be in the game and make it a fair contest."

    With that in mind and having won the toss and put Notts in this is a decent but not spectacular first nine overs with the danger man Haseeb Hameed gone but no further breakthroughs.

    It is looking uncomfortable batting for Freddie McCann and Ben Slater who has been clocked in the box by Jack White with one which darted back at him.
