Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a difficult start but it was not bad once we found the shape. It is the first time this team is playing together, once we found our patterns we scored some great goals.

"I thought the first goal from Marcus [Rashford] was really good, but so were the rest. We played with a lot of speed and were ruthless in front of goal.

"The key was the right attitude and to be 100% concentrated."

On Marcus Rashford's two goals: "I am confident that he will score. Last season was for everyone difficult, and we ended with a trophy. You can't forget it, but we hit our target and that is what we aim for this season, we want to progress."

Manchester United recorded their biggest victory under Erik ten Hag to cruise into the EFL Cup last-16 at the expense of hapless League One outfit Barnsley.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and veteran midfielder Christian Eriksen all scored twice, while Brazilian winger Antony converted a first-half spot-kick in what turned into a rout by the end.

It was United's biggest win since they hammered Southampton 9-0 in February 2021 when the stands were still empty due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was certainly a night to as far as Ten Hag’s tenure is concerned. United had not previously scored five under the Dutchman and the goals that got them there before Eriksen’s late brace was even more reason for celebration.

It was the perfect game for £50.5m midfielder Manuel Ugarte to make his first start.

The Uruguayan largely cruised through proceedings but looked composed when he was extended in a display that will give Ten Hag belief the team he has wanted virtually since his arrival at the club from Ajax in 2022 is close to completion.

Although the visiting ers were noisy in their backing of Barnsley, Darrell Clarke’s side were completely outclassed. Their most notable moment came in the first-half when Clarke himself produced a brilliant piece of skill to control a ball that had been fizzed towards the touchline after the whistle had gone. Even the home fans applauded that.

Championship side Preston North End stunned Premier League Fulham, winning 16-15 on penalties the Carabao Cup third round.

Ryan Ledson scored the winning penalty after Timothy Castagne blazed over the bar for Fulham.

Fulham's Jorge Cuenca and Preston's Kaine Kesler Hayden had earlier seen their own misses cancelled out.

Preston's success came via the longest shootout in League Cup history, eclipsing the previous record set by Derby County and Carlisle in 2016 when the Rams won 14-13.

Eberechi Eze scored against his former club to help Crystal Palace claim a 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers and reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Summer g Eddie Nketiah netted his first Palace goal to open the scoring in the 16th minute, slotting the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Joe Walsh.

A high-pressing QPR side fought back and Sam Field equalised with a looping finish eight minutes into the second half. However, the home side's hard work was undone when Eze got lucky with a shot that bounced off Steve Cook and wrong-footed Walsh.

It is the first time Palace have reached the fourth round of the EFL Cup since the 2018-19 season, when they fell to Middleborough. Oliver Glasner's side will discover their fourth-round opponents when the draw takes place on 25 September.

Eze, who left QPR for Palace in 2020, came close to grabbing an early goal, but his effort from the edge of the box fizzed over the crossbar. The England international redeemed himself shortly after, threading the ball through QPR's defence to find former Arsenal man Nketiah, who had plenty of space to poke home Palace's first.

Nketiah nearly doubled the visitors' lead before half-time when he slammed a low strike towards goal but his effort was palmed away by Walsh to the feet of Daniel Munoz, who couldn't adjust his feet in time. QPR continued to pile pressure on with a high press after the break and Dean Henderson was called to action for the first time to deny Paul Smith with a superb fingertip save.

However, the Palace keeper was at fault minutes later when his poor clearance from a corner resulted in Field's left-footed finish.

Eze had the last say on his return to Loftus Road as he darted through the middle of the pitch and cut off to the right before his strike deflected off Cook into the net.

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was the hero in the penalty shootout, saving Ashley Young's penalty in sudden death, as Southampton edged past Everton to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

In a battle of the Premier League’s two sides yet to pick up a point, the match went to a shootout after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

The first 11 efforts all found the back of the net, but Young’s strike was saved by McCarthy, leaving the travelling Southampton fans with a joyous long trip back to the south coast.

Captain for the night Abdoulaye Doucoure headed in from close range after the Saints defenders failed to clear a corner to give the home side the ideal start.

But the visitors levelled soon after with their first real opportunity of the contest as centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis rose highest to plant home a thumping header from Charlie Taylor's pin-point cross.

Winger Jesper Lindstrom is still settling in with the Blues after ing on-loan from Napoli in the summer and displayed his rustiness by wasting several decent openings.

The Dane was twice thwarted when one-on-one with McCarthy, as well as being crowded out when finding himself in a good position inside the box.

The contest headed straight to spot kicks and it was the Saints who held their nerve to progress before celebrating in front of their jubilant ers.

Fabio Carvalho put on a brilliant display as Brentford came from behind to beat League One Leyton Orient in the Carabao Cup third round.

The Bees went behind early in the contest when Brandon Cooper ran in at the back post to score from close range, getting on the end of Thomas James' cross.

Carvalho scored his first Brentford goal with a superb overhead kick after Kevin Schade had skilfully jinked inside the box and had an effort saved by the legs of goalkeeper Josh Keeley.

Carvalho was soon influential again as his lofted cross found Mikel Damsgaard, who fired in his header.

Christian Norgaard’s thumping effort from the edge of the box flew into the far corner past the despairing dive of Keeley to wrap up the victory for Brentford.

After conceding three goals in 45 minutes, Orient were unable to make a comeback, with Jamie Donley having a free-kick blocked and Jayden Sweeney firing over the crossbar.

Jack Simpson was shown a second yellow card in the 69th minute after an off-the-ball coming together with Schade, as Orient's evening went from bad to worse.

Sheffield Wednesday eased into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with victory at League One Blackpool.

Di'Shon Bernard, who had earlier seen a goal ruled out for offside, gave the Championship side the lead with a crisp close-range finish - his first goal in more than three years.

The home side improved after the break and Dominic Thompson forced a save from keeper Pierce Charles as they looked for a way back into the tie.

Steve Bruce's team never really threatened again after that, though, in a game where Blackpool made 10 changes from Saturday and the visitors made the full 11.

Victory for Wednesday saw the club progress to the fourth round of this competition for the first time since they reached the quarter finals in 2015-16.

Stoke City were made to work hard for a penalty shootout third-round Carabao Cup win over League Two side Fleetwood in front of potential new manager Narcis Pelach.

The 36-year-old is reportedly in line to replace Steven Schumacher and saw goalkeeper Viktor Johansson save two penalties to send the Potters through.

A second-half header from defender Michael Rose had looked like being enough for the Championship side, under caretaker boss Ryan Shawcross, to go into round four.

But Fleetwood - led by another veteran of the Potters' Premier League era Charlie Adam - equalised in added time through Rhys Bennett.

Both sides struggled in the shootout, with Fleetwood missing four spot-kicks, and Johansson's save from substitute Ryan Broom was ultimately decisive.
