    Surrey's openers survive the final eight overs unscathed but it is going to be a big ask for the reigning champions to win this game tomorrow after being set a target of 418 at The Oval.

    The size of their task is principally due to Essex's Charlie Allison, who made a superb 140, his maiden first-class century, before perishing as they pushed for a declaration that never happened.

    He put on 80 with Tom Westley and 116 with Noah Thain, who both scored exactly 50 for Essex, who had traield by 62 on first innings.

    Simon Harmer was not given an over before stumps - but how big a role will the spinner have on the final day?
